Bridgestone to buy Pep Boys to create largest auto care and tire store chain.

Japan-based tire company Bridgestone is buying auto parts chain Pep Boys in a deal worth $835 million that would create the largest auto care and tire store chain in the U.S., the companies said Monday. Pep Boys — the nearly 100-year-old retailer known for ads touting mascots named Manny, Moe and Jack based on its founders — will add its 800 nationwide locations to the 2,200 U.S. service centers Bridgestone operates under such banners as Firestone Complete Auto Care, Tires Plus and Wheel Works. Pep Boys was founded in Philadelphia in 1921 by four Navy friends — two of them were nicknamed Moe — who opened their first store with an $800 stake.
