CompaniesIsis Pharmaceuticals changes its name.

The California pharmaceutical company whose name became a marketing migraine with the rise of the terror group ISIS decided on Friday it was better to change its identity than fight.Isis Pharmaceuticals, a two-decade-old drug development company, announced Friday that it has finally decided to changed its name to Ionis Pharmaceuticals, for reasons that are so incredibly obvious the company doesn’t even need or want to explain them. “We decided to change our company name because, when people see or hear our name, we want them to think about the life-saving medicines we are developing,” said Lynne Parshall, chief operating officer at Ionis Pharmaceuticals, in a statement.

The Carlsbad-based company, which develops drugs for rare diseases, said the new name will “represent its innovative culture and heritage as both the pioneer and leader in the RNA-targeted therapeutic space for the past 26 years.” Ionis did not mention the Islamic State terror group in the statement announcing its name change — but it had been in the news in the past several months because of the unfortunate name game. Wade Walke, VP for corporate communications and investor relations at Isis Pharmaceuticals, told CNN Money at the time. “It’s obviously not getting better over time.” This isn’t the first brand killed by ISIS.
