Jetliner dodges possibly ‘catastrophic’ collision with drone in NYC.

Shuttle America Flight 2708 reported climbing 200 feet to avoid an unmanned aircraft on the way to LaGuardia Airport, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. The bird has no hard plastic or metal but it can still create catastrophic engine failure, so if a drone got sucked into an engine it definitely could have been catastrophic,” said Harrison Wolf of the Aviation Safety and Security Program, a think tank based at USC.

If a small, lightweight drone, for example, struck a less crucial part of the plane, such as the metal portion of the landing gear, there would likely be only minor damage, if any, he added. “It is very hard for a manned aircraft to avoid a drone,” he said, because the jetliner’s speed forces the pilot to take evasive action in a split second — if he or she even sees the drone at all.
