Target’s Website Crashes on Cyber Monday, Locking Out Some Users
Target goes down on Cyber Monday.
“Please hold tight,” a message read on Target’s site. “So sorry, but high traffic’s causing delays.” The Minneapolis-based company didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Both the company’s U.S. and international site are affected, so even consumers who aren’t scouring the web for special deals aren’t able to shop.
Target’s struggle to keep up with online shopping demand Monday morning comes on the annual day of discounts in which retailers this year are projected to pull in about $3 billion in e-commerce sales. Digital sales for Thanksgiving and Black Friday were up this year, according to Hooklogic, a company that measures sales statistics for retailers including Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Toys ‘R Us, Macy’s and others. When Target debuted its Lilly Pulitzer clothing collection back in April, its Web site slowed down and became inaccessible for a brief period as the retailer aimed to prevent the site from crashing. Many retailers and forecasters say they still expect Monday to be their biggest online shopping day of the year, even though many shoppers began their online spending several days ago.
A survey released Sunday by the National Retail Federation found that 103 million shoppers already started snapping up deals between Thanksgiving and Sunday.
