Glasgow can offer the largest concentration of high quality facilities and clubs, coaches and competitive opportunities to an aspiring student wishing to pursue academic and sporting excellence. Indeed, many tennis players come to study at Glasgow where they can combine their course of choice with top-level tennis.

Recent Glasgow graduate and former world ranked player, Frances Hendry, is one such example, who combined her Business and French degree with representative honours for Great Britain at the World Student Games. During this time, she played for her university in the British Universities & Colleges Sportleagues and for Glasgow south side club Newlands in the county and national leagues.

Facilities and Clubs

The choice of facilities (both indoor and outdoor) and clubs in Glasgow range from “pay and play centres” at Scotstoun and Gorbals ITI’s to two David Lloyd Centres (one in the West End) and two Esportas to the many high profile clubs spread across the city: Strathgryffe, Thorn Park, Western and Newlands to name but a few. Such clubs compete in singles and doubles leagues at local, county, national and GB level for instance the AEGON Scottish Cup and the AEGON Team Tennis Championships.

Players can tap into Glasgow’s significant talent base in such coaches as Scottish internationalist Jordan Gray (Thorn Park and Scotstoun), David Lloyd Anniesland’s Gary and Toby Smith (brother Leon was Andy Murray’s former coach), former Davis Cup player Alan Mackin at Giffnock and Malcolm Watt at Newlands. Karen Ross, the West of Scotland Talent and Performance Co-ordinator, leads the way in disability tennis having coached the GB Paralympics Team players, Gordon Reid and Kevin Simpson and also the GB Learning Disability Team at the World Championships. Ellinore Lightbody is the Scottish National Coach.

As well as being coached, there is a very well structured pathway for players wishing to add coaching qualifications to their armoury with the formative UKCC Level 1 and Level 2 courses being run in Glasgow throughout the year, leading to opportunities to do Club Coach and beyond.
