Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc. is changing its name to Ionis Pharmaceuticals Inc., giving up its steadfast defense of its former brand in the wake of a series of terror attacks linked to the Middle Eastern militant group of the same name. “When people see or hear our name, we want them to think about the life-saving medicines we are developing,” Lynne Parshall, the company’s chief operating officer, said in the statement. While the militant group, which is also known as the Islamic State, has been operating for years, the company began weighing a name change last month because the deadly Paris attacks unnerved employees. Wade Walke, VP for corporate communications and investor relations at Isis Pharmaceuticals, told CNN Money at the time. “It’s obviously not getting better over time.” This isn’t the first brand killed by ISIS. Ionis Pharmaceuticals is an original name that the Company has chosen to represent its innovative culture and heritage as both the pioneer and leader in the RNA-targeted therapeutic space for the past 26 years. “Our goal is to create medicines that will save patients’ lives, and we are proud to be at the forefront of creating innovative medicines.
